The most famous site for petrified wood in Madagascar is the region around Mahajanga. The petrified wood from there is believed to be coniferous trees (Araucaria) from the Triassic period (between 200 and 250 million years old).
Petrified wood is also called tree quartz or fossil wood in literature.
