Touching the Earth (Bhumisparsa) is probably the most common mudra and symbolizes an important episode in Buddha's life: As he sat meditating under the Bodhi tree in Bodgaya (India) with the firm intention of achieving enlightenment, his enemy Mara, the earth goddess, tried to take him with him to seduce young women. The Buddha then touched the earth with one hand, showing the earth goddess how mentally strong he was. At that moment he achieved enlightenment.
