Cistus is a bushy shrub with wild rose-like flowers and thrives on the dry, lime-poor soils of the garrigue and maquis of the Mediterranean region. Cistrose is one of the famous aromatic substances of antiquity; it was used as a smoke and to prevent disease. In perfumery it is used in (oriental) perfumes, soaps and also in food flavoring. Naturopathy uses cistrose to treat skin and lymph.
