Copal resin is a type of aromatic resin obtained from trees in the Burseraceae family, mainly in Central and South America. It is also found in parts of Africa and Asia. Copal resin is commonly used in cultural and religious practices as well as traditional medicine.
The resin is harvested by making small cuts in the tree bark and collecting the sticky sap that oozes out. The sap is then allowed to dry and forms hard lumps or tears. Copal resin varies in color from light yellow to dark brown and has a pleasant aroma when burned.
Copal resin has been used for centuries by indigenous cultures in Mesoamerica, particularly the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. It was used as incense in religious ceremonies as well as for medicinal purposes. Today, copal resin is still used in various spiritual practices such as smudging, meditation and purification rituals. Due to its aromatic properties, it is also used in some perfumes and cosmetics.
